Are Skinny Skinny Women Really More Beautiful than Plus-Size Women?

by Uche Onegeria 13 Dec , 2016

This story trended online last week and is based on the campaign where “plus-size women re-created a bunch of ads to prove the fashion industry wrong”. Of course, it caught my attention.

Since the beginning of time, twig-figured women have graced our magazines, runways and television screens. Somehow, they have become the standard of beauty all over the world. Even the African society which initially embraced fattening houses and promoted full-figured women have also ditched their own standard for the waify body frames.

Which begs the question, “are skinny women really more beautiful than fatter women?” Is beauty a factor of one’s body mass? I mean, I have heard that beauty is skin deep. Beauty is in the hair (a woman’s hair is her crowning glory) but I am yet to hear any beauty stereotype attributed to body size. So why do 99% of our fashion houses only design for skinny women and also adamantly use skinny models even when the general population is a blend of various body sizes?
